Day 2 recap: Packers draft 3 pass catchers and players to watch on Day 3

Green Bay Packers fans who were upset that the team gave its pick to receivers and tight ends on Thursday must have been happy when general manager Brian Gutekunst selected three straight pass catchers on Day 2 of the draft.

Luke Musgrave, a tight end out of Oregon State, was selected by Green Bay with the 42nd overall pick, a pick they received from the New York Jets in the Aaron Rodgers trade. Musgrave is a high-upside F tight end who can be dealt as often as he ranks in the lineup. Think of him as a roll of the dice, getting a Darren Waller-type player without paying him as a high-end tight end.

Down twice, turning the 45th pick into the 50th pick and two Day 3 draft picks, Gutekunst made the second pick of the day: Jayden Reed, a receiver from Michigan State. Notably, Reed was coached by Tim Lester as a true freshman at Western Michigan State, where he earned freshman All-America honors. Lester now works for the Packers as an analyst. Reed is a speedy receiver who can play both in the slot and as an outside receiver. However, his calling card could be profitable as many considered him the best return in his class.

The team’s final selection on Friday was South Dakota State’s Tucker Kraft, the Packers’ second tight end selection of the day. Craft, who is athletic enough to fill in as a pass catcher himself, is more of a true Y than Musgrave — meaning he could be a dirty player at the position when the offense is in 12 personnel. .

Acme Packing Company Tex Western, Tyler Brooks and Justice Mosqueda reconvened after Friday’s results to discuss the players the Packers selected, the players they wish the team had moved up and what to look for on Day 3 of the draft. Drafts usually stop after a few rounds, it’s just that Justis put together a list of 27 players worth keeping an eye on for Day 3 — either because they were visits from the Packers or because they have interesting projections.
